The idea behind

The idea comes from two technicians of Clinic Engineering trying to solve the problems of moving/ driving hospital beds/stretchers or industrial carts, especially in narrow spaces.

This patented device aims to:

  • reduce the risk of physical injury to the operator involved in moving/driving of beds/stretchers/carts, in compliance with the current regulations;
  • make bed moving more comfortable also in narrow spaces, avoiding any damages due to bumps against wall edges and doors;
  • grant a more comfortable transport with enhancing outcomes for patients and their caregivers;
  • reduce business costs because only one operator is needed for patient transportation.

Demo of “SEGUILO” Servo-assisted steering wheel for beds/stretchers/carriages

This demo video shows a test bed of 80 kilos weight set up with additional 80+80 kilos (240 kg total weight) and equipped with:

  • Standard steering wheel
  • Fifth steering wheel
  • "Seguilo wheel" for industrial environment offering the same driving characteristics of the wheel designed to hospital environment
  • Dynamometer to detect push/pull/twist forces applied by the operator during bed moving.

FAQ

What about “Seguilo” ?

“Seguilo” is an innovative battery-powered system designed to move/drive hospital beds, stretchers and industrial carts, without any strain and stress for operators and porters.

Thanks to this system, bed moving can be performed in extremely narrow spaces and busy corridors avoiding continuous stops and starts in presence of obstacles or turns, thus reducing stress to the operator and the discomfort experienced by the patient.

How is made “Seguilo”?

It consists of three parts:

  • "Seguilo wheel" (to be installed in place of a pivoting wheel of the bed/stretcher/cart
  • "Seguilo controller" (to be fixed to the bed, thrust-side)
  • "Seguilo driver" (to be fitted on "Seguilo wheel")

 What is the main requirement for using “Seguilo” system?

Check that “Seguilo” device is compatible to be fitted to the specific bed/stretcher or cart; if so, replace a pivoting wheel with the compatible “Seguilo wheel” and then supply the portable device “Seguilo driver+controller” to the operator.

Should the operator/caregiver be trained?

Yes, the way to move the bed/stretcher/cart with “Seguilo” device is different from the usual mover systems provided with steering wheel or fifth wheel.

“Seguilo” grants an outstanding manoeuvrability and requires short training.

Is “Seguilo” a drive wheel?

No, it isn't. “Seguilo” device is not equipped with power drive; the energy required to move the bed/stretcher/cart is supplied by the operator himself.

“Seguilo” is a wheel with steering function (+60 degrees R.H. and +60 degrees L.H.).

Is it possible to use only one "Seguilo driver + controller" device to move 100 or more beds/stretchers/carts?

Yes, of course. The operator provided with "Seguilo driver+controller" is able to move/drive any bed/stretcher/carts previously fitted with "Seguilo wheel", obviously, only one at a time.

Can any bed/stretcher/cart provided with “Seguilo” device be used exactly as prior to its installation?

Yes, if you don't insert “Seguilo driver” into the “Seguilo wheel”, it rolls as an ordinary pivoting wheel.

Is it possible to use the bed with its original steering wheel (in case of retrofitting)?

Yes, of course. Even if you install “Seguilo” device in a bed/stretcher/cart already in use, only the pivoting wheel will be replaced, not the steering one.

Therefore, if the operator uses the "Seguilo driver + controller" system, a better bed handling and manoeuvrability is ensured, but he can also use it with the original steering system at any time.

Is it possible to fit a new purchased bed/stretcher/cart with “Seguilo” device?

Of course; there are no contraindications; "Seguilo wheel" is a “patented” pivoting wheel.

 What is the working time of "Seguilo driver+ controller"?

It varies depending on the intended use, approximately more than 8 hours.

How heavy is the portable device "Seguilo driver+ controller"?

The total weight is 1500 grams.

What is the operating mode of “Seguilo” device?

The operator enters the room to move the bed, takes “Seguilo driver+controller” with him, holds the controller and inserts “Seguilo driver” into “Seguilo wheel”, magnetically coupled. The wheel brings itself in straight position independently. Then, the operator applies the controller to the bed side to start pushing and pulling activities.

Now the operator is ready to move the bed, by operating the controller to drive the bed side provided with “Seguilo wheel”, to the right/left/straight-ahead direction.

The resulting benefit is nearly identical to the one obtained with the help of a second operator.

Thanks to “Seguilo” device, the operator can move the bed, thus avoiding many starts and stops, that are necessary with other systems currently in use.

Is it possible to let “Seguilo” wheel be completely pivoting, when used with "Seguilo driver"?

Yes, you only have to press a key on “Seguilo controller” to make the wheel either steering or pivoting. This is necessary, i.e., when the operator should place the bed inside an elevator.

What is a main advantage for the operator using “Seguilo”?

As shown in the demo video, “Seguilo” system allows the operator to perform any push/pull manoeuvre without twisting his back and/or chest to keep bed in line or for moving it in narrow spaces.

How much less “effort” will be done by the operator using “Seguilo”?

It depends on the path; in wide spaces, the operator's effort can be reduced by more than 30% and in narrow spaces you get to over 300%.

On every standing start, the operator's effort will be reduced by approx. 30%.

In addition, with “Seguilo” device, the risk of twisting manoeuvres for the operator is totally eliminated.

As shown in the demo video, the bed can be easily moved with just one hand.
